Kamakura is a city that blends a rich history with a modern outlook, known for its love for sports such as surfing and yacht racing, as well as for its seaside resorts and residential areas. "Weekend House Alley", located by the sea and surrounded by a lush landscape, brings together the different aspects of Kamakura into a commercial facility and multi-family housing complex.
The complex can be seen as both a weekend house and a residence or a commercial facility that can also serve as an office space. Unlike traditional commercial facilities that rely on a giant enclosed space to drive consumerism, this complex opens up to the city with a collection of smaller buildings more closely resembling residential structures. It also reconnects functions that were separated in the 20th century, such as residences and shops or office space and retail.
Kamakura is known for its small alleyways that cut through hills and offer views of the ocean. The complex is divided into 7 irregularly shaped volumes, similar in scale to the surrounding residences, and situated in one of these alleys. Standing in this alley, the visitor can see a convergence of the ocean, hills, and residential areas, creating a dynamic and familiar space. The lives and activities within the complex will blend with the alley, creating an open architecture that is a new landscape in the city.
